INTRODUCTION TO ACUPUNCTURE

A month-long workshop series with Dr. Charles Kim, M.D, LAc

If you are interested in learning more about acupuncture and how it can be used in conjunction with Western Medicine, join SIM during the month of March for one-hour weekly sessions with Dr. Charles Kim, M.D., F.A.A.P.M.R., C.Ac.

Dr. Kim is Board-Certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Pain Medicine, and Medical Acupuncture. He is the Director of Medical Acupuncture, Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology, Assistant Professor of Rehabilitation Medicine, and Fellow of the American Academy of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Mount Sinai. He has been quoted in several national and international news sources on his work in Pain Medicine and Medical Acupuncture (New York Times, ABC news.com, USA Today, Forbes), and has appeared on television news broadcasts across the country, including interviews on the CBS, ABC, WB, and FOX networks.

  • What is Traditional Chinese Medicine?
  • How do acupuncture and cupping work?
  • What is the difference between deficient and stagnant qi(chi)?
  • Learn about the meridian system and some basic acupuncture points.
 DIAGNOSIS
  • Understand diagnoses from an acupuncturist’s perspective.
  • How can acupuncturists use the tongue as a diagnostic tool?
  • How does taking a pulse differ from conventional medicine?
  • Diagnose one student and begin to treat him/her.
  • Begin to learn a specific type of acupuncture (ear acupuncture) more in depth.
 HANDS-ON
  • Continue exploring ear acupuncture.
  • Experience what acupuncture/cupping feels like by practicing on each other.
 WRAP-UP
  • Case study: When is acupuncture an appropriate form of treatment.
  • Evaluate student who was treated.
  • Discuss benefits/drawbacks of acupuncture.
